Did You Know? Eucalyptus Hill Is Named After a Failed Timber Boom

Drive through Eucalyptus Hill today and those towering trees feel permanent, practically part of the bedrock. They shade the streets, frame the ocean views, and give the neighborhood its name. But the story behind how they got here is stranger than most residents realize: the trees that define this hillside are a product of a speculative bubble that spectacularly burst.

Eucalyptus is native to Australia, not California. It arrived here in the late 1800s as an exotic novelty, and Santa Barbara had a starring role in bringing it to the region. In 1872, Goleta rancher Ellwood Cooper began planting eucalyptus on his land west of town, eventually putting in some 50,000 trees of more than 50 varieties. Cooper believed passionately that eucalyptus could solve California's timber shortage. He even wrote the book on it, literally, publishing Forest Culture and Eucalyptus Trees in 1876.

Cooper's enthusiasm helped spark a much bigger phenomenon a few decades later. Between 1907 and 1913, a full-blown eucalyptus boom swept the state. Investors, convinced these fast-growing Australian imports would solve a looming national timber famine, planted millions of trees up and down California.

Eucalyptus Hill's own groves date from this era of exotic-tree enthusiasm. Frederick Forrest Peabody, an Eastern industrialist building his Solana estate here, imported and planted more than 7,000 eucalyptus trees along the road leading up to his mansion, which was completed in 1915. That road became Eucalyptus Hill Road, and the name stuck.

Then the bubble popped. It turned out young eucalyptus wood warped and cracked as it dried, making it essentially useless as construction lumber. A U.S. Department of Agriculture report confirmed the bad news, and the commercial dream collapsed almost as fast as it had inflated. Investors who'd bet on eucalyptus as the next great timber crop were left holding groves of trees with no market.

But here's the twist: the trees didn't go anywhere. Unsuited for lumber, they stayed in the ground, and over the following century they grew into the towering, fragrant landmarks that gave this neighborhood its identity and its name.

So the next time you're driving up Eucalyptus Hill Road, you're not just passing pretty trees. You're passing the living remains of one of California's more fascinating financial miscalculations, one that, by accident, helped create one of Santa Barbara's most beautiful and sought-after addresses.
